Here are some of the features of NewsDisk, and instructions on
how to use it:
When NewsDisk is run, it checks the current directory for files
with certain extenders. These extenders are .COL, .REV, .ART, .ADS, and
.RUN. Any files with these extenders are files to be viewed with NewsDisk.
The names of the files minus extenders will appear in the GEM menu bar.
.COL = Columns - articles that are usually in every
newsletter
.REV = Reviews - reviews of the latest products
.ART = Articles - like columns, but don't appear in
every issue
.ADS = Advertisements
.RUN = Executable files - Show off some public domain
s/ware
Each .RUN file must have a corresponding .DOC file that will
be displayed before the program is executed.
As each file is being displayed, clicking the left mouse button will
pause the display. Hitting the left button again resumes the display.
Clicking the right mouse button aborts the display so you can choose a
new file to view.
There are two title screens for NewsDisk. One is done in high
resolution, the other in medium. Use Degas to create both screens, then
include both under the names TITLE.PI3 for high rez, and TITLE.PI2 for
medium rez.
The executable programs that you include with NewsDisk should be
small, fast programs or demos. NewsDisk reserves 6 times the size of the
executable program. Keep it small or 520ST users without upgrades might
not get it to work. If the program is too big, it will not run. NewsDisk
should not bomb. Tell the reader that if the program does not work to
re-boot without any accessories.
Make sure you include a .DOC file for each .RUN file on the disk.
It will be displayed before the .RUN file is executed. Also make sure
the .RUN file runs in both medium and high resolution. If they don't,
MAKE SURE you mention that in the .DOC file so the reader can stop the
program from running if they are in the wrong resolution.
The text files that you use with NewsDisk should be straight ASCII
files with a right margin of about 78. Don't use files that have words split
between lines!
If you want to include pictures, make a slide show program the
.RUN file and put the pictures on the disk.
